THE MOST COMMON HINDRANCE

The most common hindrance we hear from people who want to go on a short-term mission is the cost–even though they have a strong desire to serve. The cost can seem daunting but the reality is, traveling overseas and doing ministry is costly but this is where faith comes in! Short-term missions is an opportunity to stretch your faith; not only in regard to the expense, but also in regard to stepping out into the unknown and challenging your view and trust of God. How much do you really trust Him to provide for you?  Scripture teaches us that God is a good father who desires to give good gifts to His children. If he has placed a desire in your heart to go, He is faithful to provide the resources.

DO I HAVE TO RAISE SUPPORT?

Asking others to support your mission trip can be intimidating and uncomfortable but it gives others an opportunity to partner with you. Everyone is called to missions. Some are called to go, and some are called to send those who go. Scripture teaches us that those who support mission trips are credited with the good work that is accomplished. You’re not simply asking people for money, you are asking them to partner with you in accomplishing a mission.  In the end, everyone is blessed for their part. No, you don't have to raise the money, but we encourage everyone to invite others to give toward the mission. What better way to build community and involve your friends, family, and your local church in what God is doing in your life and around the world.

DON'T KNOW WHERE TO BEGIN?

The most effective way to raise support is to ask! Face-to-face, personal solicitation is the most effective way to call friends and family to action. It takes courage, but people want to give to you and what you are passionate about. You can also use other ways to promote your mission trip by providing a product or service to those you are soliciting. There are a number of support raising ideas available online that can assist you with coming up with some ideas. Check with your local restaurants for fundraising options and if you are raising support with a team, you can organize group events such as car washes, rummage sales, bake sales, and spaghetti dinners. Be creative and take advantage of your own unique talents and abilities. Your options are limitless!

SHORT-TERM MISSIONS FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

WHAT ARE THE AGE REQUIREMENTS?

Some locations and activities are not favorable for small children so we do not travel with children under the age of eight. Children 8-13 will need to travel with a parent or guardian. Teens 14-18 may travel without a parent, but there are specific release forms that must be notarized. There is no maximum age for adults. We just ask that physical limitations are taken into consideration when joining a mission.

HOW DO I JOIN A MISSION TEAM?

The first step is to click on a desired mission and complete the Interest Form. Once the Discover Missions team receives your request to join a mission, they will email you all of the forms and requirements.

WHAT IF I WANT TO SERVE SOMEWHERE YOU DON'T HAVE LISTED?

We are continually exploring, planning, and conducting short-term missions all year long but not all of our opportunities are listed online for a variety of reasons. Please contact us to explore additional opportunities and we will do our best to get you where you want to go. However, we will never send you somewhere where we do not have a long-term missionary presence.

WHAT DOES THE MISSION COSTS COVER?

Each of our short-term missions have an all-inclusive cost that covers domestic and international airfare, lodging, ground transportation, trip insurance, project funds, and daily meals. Passports and required immunizations are not included. Each participant will need to bring money for any meals or snacks purchased in the airport and for personal spending money. Depending on the location, there may be a fun day activity that typically costs $20 per person that may not be included in the team funds. All costs will be communicated in advance.

WHEN ARE MY MISSION FUNDS DUE?

Half of all trip funds are due 60 days before the team departure date. The remaining funds are due no later than 30 days before departure. We communicate all support raising and form submission deadlines to each of our individuals/teams.

HOW CAN I SHARE MY MISSION WITH OTHERS?

The most effective way to share your mission is through conversation. Writing a personal fundraising letter is a great way to open up the opportunity to share your mission, your support raising goals, and provide information on how they can donate. Social media is also a great tool to spread the word and you will be able to create an online support raising campaign from our website.

WHAT SHOULD I SAY IN MY SUPPORT RAISING LETTER OR CAMPAIGN?

The most important thing to communicate in your support raising letter or online campaign is your heart. Determine why you want to go on the mission and how you are expecting God to use you. Share that vision and purpose with others. Be sure to include all of the important information such as your name, mission location and date, your support raising goal, and all giving options.

HOW CAN PEOPLE GIVE TO MY MISSION?

You can direct your supporters to give by credit card through our website or through your online campaign. They may also call our World Headquarters at 904.398.6559 (M-Th) or mail their donations directly to Go To Nations, PO Box 10305, Jacksonville, FL 32247. Please have them include the trip code and your name in the memo.

WHAT DO I DO WHEN CHECKS OR CASH ARE GIVEN DIRECTLY TO ME?

Please encourage your donors to make their checks payable to Go To Nations but if they give you cash or a check written out to your name, you can mail a replacement check (or bank check through online bill pay) to Go To Nations. Please include the names and addresses of those who gave so that we can send them a tax-deductible receipt for their gift. Please do not go online and give those funds through your own campaign in your own name. This will give you the tax-deduction and receipt instead of to your donors.

CAN I CONTRIBUTE TO MY OWN SHORT-TERM MISSION?

Yes! You can contribute to your own mission trip but we encourage everyone to support raise and give others the opportunity to share in the mission.

DO MY SUPPORTERS GET A TAX DEDUCTIBLE RECEIPT?

Since we are a 501c3 non-profit organization, every donation we receive is tax deductible and each donor will receive a tax-deductible receipt.

WHAT HAPPENS IF I MISS A DEADLINE?

Certain deadlines are necessary to completing everything needed for leaving the country and planning ministry opportunities with our field missionaries. Please contact us if you do not believe you will be able to meet a deadline. We will do our best to work with you.

WHAT IF I RAISE MORE THAN I NEED?

Excess funds will be used to help another member of your team that has yet to reach their support raising goals or they will be used to further the ministry work of the mission. The more funds available for the mission enables for more ministry opportunities. Excess funds cannot be refunded.

WHAT IF I AM SHORT ON MY FINANCIAL SUPPORT?

We will do everything we can to work with you so that you stay on track and can go on the mission. If you do not raise all of the funds necessary to go, you can donate those funds to help someone else on your team or we can hold your funds for up to one year for you to join another team at a later date.

IN THE EVENT OF A CANCELLATION, CAN MY DONATIONS BE REFUNDED?

When donations are given to a non-profit organization such as Go To Nations, those charitable funds are surrendered for the use of the organization and held in trust for the purpose in which it was given and the donor receives a tax-deductible receipt. Therefore, charitable contributions are unable to be returned to any donor, whether the donor is you or someone known to you.

In the event that a short-term mission is cancelled by Go To Nations, all donated funds are held in trust until the mission can be rescheduled. If a short-term missionary is unable to go on the mission as planned and needs to revoke their participation, Go To Nations will hold their donated funds for them for one year.
